What does distance learning mean?

Answered By Devon Turnhill, Editor

Imagine studying in the comforts of your home, at your own pace, in front of your computer. Unlike in a formal classroom setting wherein there's high interaction between the student and the teacher, distance learning involves only very limited interaction between the student and the teacher. These two actors are separated by time and/or space and interaction is mediated through technologies like computer, video and teleconferencing, emails and chats, print modules and books, and telephones. The student learns at his own pace and convenience, following a structured program or curriculum. Distance learning courses are not as restrictive as compared to formal classes, with lesser assignments and requirements.
